Tutorial Series: How to Start an Online Business
After the success of the Interview Series on Off the Top of My Head, I decided to branch out a bit in several directions. I have already launched the Website Review Series and started gauging interest for an interview series which asks well known webmasters non webmaster questions about their hobbies, etc. Off of those successes I have now decided to start a tutorial series on starting an online business.
In my mind there are four main areas of online business which all ventures can be lumped into. They are Physical Product Sales, Affiliate Sales, Advertising Driven Communities and Services. Although I have had experience with all of these, my strongest area by far is in Physical Product Sales. Therefore this tutorial will deal with that aspect of online business.
Now to do it right, I have decided to split it up quite extensively. Right now it is shaping up to be a 21 part series due to the amount of detail but like all things could grow quite quickly. I had also originally thought about writing an ebook but instead settled on adding it to the blog to get as much exposure as possible. This will influence the type of guide I write and ensure it is always about information, not revenue.
I plan to start right from the beginning with my first published post being titled “Starting a Business Tutorial Series: Choosing Your Product”. I will then use that same format so that each section can be followed in sequential order. By linking to the older chapters, it will also bind them all together via the comments of older ones.
This series began on Monday March 6th and should run straight through to May, with a new chapter being published each Monday/Thursday. You can view the Table Of Contents to get started.

I hope so too although it will start off pretty basic in the first 7 or so chapters. So far they are broken down into things like Choosing Your Product, Writing a Business Plan, Choosing a Domain etc, etc
I plan to then get into Public Relations and Site Promotion which may be of more interest to those with established sites.

It will become more popular if you cover each topic, regardless of the people with varying levels of expertise in the business.

It’s good to start out basic and go up from there. The main topics are basic. Once readers have those areas down, then you can get a lot more advanced and detailed into areas such as “advice to make the big Adsense bucks”, which ultimately is what most forum visitors seem to be interested in …

Great start Jason… It’s good to get info direct from the people who are out there making a success of internet businesses, rather than some e-book that is there just to scam inexperienced people with big dreams.
Look forward to more…

Hi,
I think I would have to return to your blog again and again. My wife recently joined a team selling Japanese health products, and roped me in to help. Your tutorial series is an eye opener. Thanks.

Like everyone else who seemed to respond, I too want, covet, desire online financial success. I just lost my job at a major software company due to some misconstrued comments I made — that hurt. Especially as it’s around the holiday.
I’ve been working hard on building sites and hoping to develop Adsense income. I certainly welcome blogs like this that can give really good, empirical, no-fluff info on what works and what doesn’t. There is nothing like learning from others to save time.
Just my two cents worth.
Best,
GR

Sorry. I needed to make a postscript comment. When I mentioned my trial of losing my job, the point I was trying to make was that I really, really, REALLY would like to work for myself if I could. As anyone knows though who has ever started a business, it takes time, money, and more time and money.
At the least, I’m hoping to develop another revenue stream in addition to the normal day job stream of income.
Thanks,
GR

It amazes me how actually difficult it is to start online and I believe that the problem, for me and others, is that we equate the internet with speed and therefore an online business should become profitable at blinding speed.
Doesn’t work that way.
Because online will never have the human touch. Great in some respects, tough in others.
