Ultimately what is the purpose of a forum but to express what you know about the matter discussed and if you have a good number of memebers, Why bother including more?

Perhaps the answer is to find your own kid at $2 an hour to constantly police your site. :)

If you really plan on closing to new members, you could always add a refferal clause. You don't get in unless someone reffers you who is a member. At least in the SEO forums, most people have a pretty good idea who many of the others are. If the want to be part of your forum, they need to look around and find someone who woudl reffer them to you.

At least that would keep your forum from getting completly stagnet

Yea, you're right that it would put off some new members, maybe even most. But, heck, he's saying he doesn't want any new members anyway. Maybe he'd take the ones who paid him. ;)

Forcing new registrants to pay is a really good idea to avoid spam and bots though I think it would put off a lot of new members, it could work on an authority(ish) forum that didn't have much competition (if they actually exist).

Pounding the skulls of the spammers would be about as refreshing as a cold beer after a hard day's work. lol

First, you've got to stop using phpBB.

One idea I saw recently (on Forumtrends.com I think) was a guy who's charging a nominal fee for new registrations. Should be some way to automate that too, new members pay a couple bucks would weed out the spambots pretty well, I'd think.
